LANDSTUHL, Germany, Jan. 25, 2012 - Medical-surgical teams at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center here save the lives every day of warriors wounded in Afghanistan and, until recently, saved troops wounded in Iraq. But that's only part of their success.
Here, a side benefit of providing relentlessly superior care from the point of injury in the war zone to what doctors call "definitive care" -- care given to manage a patient's condition -- has been to advance the practice of military medicine and, ultimately, the practice of medicine everywhere.
For medical teams at Landstuhl, the brutality of combat and the urgent need to respond to the wounded have yielded advances in en-route lung bypass, whole-blood transfusion, and even combat tourniquets that can be applied with one hand and in the dark.....

BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 10, 2012 - A sophisticated prosthetic knee with a newly designed microprocessor is giving many wounded warriors with above-the-knee amputations the chance to return to active duty, military medical officials here reported.
Wounded warriors who had such severe limb loss in the early days of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were fitted with a prosthetic, rehabilitated and medically retired in most cases, amputee services officials at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said....

Dear Angels and Friends,

As we shared last week,the volunteers of Soldiers' Angels pulled together to create an amazing holiday season for America's heroes and their families.

Continuing that work in the face of this year's sure challenges requires a positive outlook. The following list popped into my email box in 2008, and I have remembered and shared this advice every New Year since in an effort to remain as positive as possible when facing the challenges life often throws our way.

I don’t think anything more needs to be said about how we Angels must face this coming year and the challenges it will hold...

20 Tips for a Positive New Year

Stay Positive. You can listen to the cynics and doubters and believe that success is impossible or you can know that with faith and an optimistic attitude all things are possible.
When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement: My purpose is_______________________.
Take a morning walk of gratitude. It will create a fertile mind ready for success.
Instead of being disappointed about where you are think optimistically about where you are going.
Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
Transform adversity into success by deciding that change is not your enemy but your friend. In the challenge discover the opportunity.
Make a difference in the lives of others.
Believe that everything happens for a reason and expect good things to come out of challenging experiences.
Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
Mentor someone and be mentored by someone.
Live with the 3 E's. Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy.
Remember there’s no substitute for hard work.
Zoom Focus. Each day when you wake up in the morning ask: “What are the three most important things I need to do today that will help me create the success I desire?” Then tune out all the distractions and focus on these actions.
Instead of complaining focus on solutions. It’s the key to innovation.
Read more books than you did in 2010.
Learn from mistakes and let them teach you to make positive changes.
Focus on “Get to” vs “Have to.” Each day focus on what you get to do, not what you have to do. Life is a gift not an obligation.
Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements:
• I am thankful for __________.
• Today I accomplished____________.
Smile and laugh more. They are natural anti-depressants.
Enjoy the ride. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy it.

The Soldiers’ Angels wouldn’t let fall pass without putting on their annual Oktoberfest Bavarian BBQ. Great food! Good friends! A wonderful time to be had by all! A giant thank you to the Soldiers’ Angels for another AMAZING EVENT!

The Christmas Spirit - You are Needed

“I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars
and open a jar of it every month.”

Dear Angels and Friends,

That quote describes how I feel about the wonderful gifts of money and time and love that have poured out on our troops and their families this holiday season.

But I’ve also been thinking about how the needs of the troops and military families continue year-round. We DO need a jar of that Christmas giving spirit every single month of the year!

Please help Soldiers’ Angels continue to spread that giving, supportive spirit to our heroes no matter the season.

Please donate to extend this holiday spirit year-round.

When the decorations are taken down and our daily schedules resume, American heroes will still be deployed in Afghanistan and they will still need care packages.
Wounded Warriors will still be fighting their way back to recovery.

Veterans will still need help adjusting to new lives.

And some military families will still be struggling.

They all will need to know we remember them beyond the holiday season.

Please donate to extend this holiday spirit year-round.

$5. $10… $50… or more… $5 sends a phonecard to a wounded warrior so that he can check in with her family. $10 is almost enough postage to send a care package to a hero who wonders if anyone other than his mom and dad knows he’s still deployed...
The need is great, but together we can move mountains.

The need of our military and their families for emotional and physical support continues with the turn of the page on the Holiday Season, but there is still time to mark this Christmas with a gift from the heart.
